'Car surfing' incident ends in injuries, arrest

An Inyo resident has suffered major injuries following an apparent "car surfing" accident Tuesday, July 21.
Inyo County Sheriff’s deputies, Bishop Police, and paramedics responded to a report of an unconscious male on Johnston Drive in Bishop Tuesday, July 21. Initial witness reports indicated the male subject hit his head after jumping from a tree along the Owens River. The subject suffered serious injuries and was subsequently flown to Renown Hospital in Reno. Law enforcement has been unable to obtain a statement from him due to his injuries.
Investigators for the Inyo County Sheriff and Bishop Police Department determined the injuries sustained by the subject were inconsistent with the initial statements. Upon further investigation, it was determined the subject had fallen from the roof of a moving vehicle driven by Todd Anthony Talamates, 28, of Bishop. Talamantes did not report the incident and left the area prior to law enforcement’s arrival. Witness statements indicated all involved parties had been consuming alcohol heavily that afternoon.
On Saturday, July 25, Talamantes was arrested in Bishop on unrelated arrest warrants. Talamantes was booked at the Inyo County Jail on the warrants and the following charges: violation of probation, driving under the influence causing great bodily injury, reckless driving causing great bodily injury and hit and run resulting in injury.
