Which Roads and Campgrounds are Open for Memorial Day?

The recent rainy and snowy weather has made it hard to keep up with which roads and passes are open. Here's the best list the MT has for the Memorial Day Weekend:

Sonora Pass Road is closed, but the other high mountain passes were open as of Thursday, May 21, according to authorities. However, the passes, the White Mountain Road to Schulman Grove, and Reds Meadow (and others) could all be temporarily closed if the snow level drops, said Deb Schweizer, the public information specialist for the Inyo National Forest. “Precipitation is in the forecast for the whole week and most of the weekend; however the systems are warmer than earlier storms,” she said, meaning the precipitation is less likely to fall as snow.

Here is a comprehensive look at what is open and what is not, from the Mono Lake area to Lone Pine:

Lee Vining area
All passes are open as weather conditions allow.
Roads open: Monitor Pass (S.R, 89), Tioga Pass (S.R. 120 W), Saddlebag Lake Rd., Bodie (S.R. 270), Lundy Canyon, June Lake Loop (Hwy 158), Panum Crater, Parker Lake, South Tufa.
Road Closed: Sonora Pass (S.R.108), Saddlebag Road remains closed due to muddy conditions, likely to remain closed through Memorial Day Weekend.
Note: The Lee Vining Rockfall Safety Project (CalTrans) project is now underway along the shores of Mono Lake north of Lee Vining and the turnoff to U.S. 120 West/Tioga Pass Road, creating 20 minute deals and funneling traffic into one lane so plan accordingly.
Traffic will be reduced to one lane with a 24/7 reversing traffic pattern, so expect daily lane closures with delays no longer than 20 minutes, Monday through Thursday from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Fridays 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. with flaggers and a pilot car.
One-hour delays could occur Monday thru Thursday from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. Notices will be posted when exact dates become available for the one-hour closures.
Campgrounds open or opening: Aspen (5/22), Big Bend (5/22), Big Springs, Upper and Lower Deadman (5/22), Ellery Lake (5/22), Tioga Lake (5/22), Glass Creek (5/22), Obsidian Flat Group (5/22), Junction (5/22), Hartley, Lower Lee Vining, Lundy Canyon (county), June Lake, Gull Lake, Oh Ridge, Silver Lake.
Campgrounds closed: Moraine (6/13), Reversed Creek (6/13), Sawmill Walk-in, Saddlebag Lake (6/13), Trailhead Group (6/13).
The Mono Basin Scenic Area Visitor Center is open, 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., seven days a week.

Mammoth area
Roads open: Convict Lake, Hot Creek Hatchery, Inyo Craters, Lakes Basin, Laurel Canyon (snow covered above 10,000 feet), Mammoth Creek, Mammoth Scenic Loop, Sherwin Creek.
The Reds Meadow/Devils Postpile Road will open May 22, weather conditions permitting.
Campgrounds open or opening: Convict Lake, Mammoth Mtn. RV (private), New Shady Rest Sherwin Creek, Twin Lakes, Lake Mary (5/22), Reds Meadow (5/22), Brown’s Owens River.
Campgrounds closed: Agnew Meadows, Agnew Meadows Group, Agnew Meadows Horse Campground, Coldwater (6/13), Devils Postpile (6/12), Old Shady Rest (6/13), Lake George (6/13), Minaret Falls (6/13), Pine City (6/13), Pine Glen Family/Group (6/13), Pumice Flat (6/13), Pumice Flat Group (6/13), Upper Soda Springs (6/13).
Devils Postpile Ranger Station is closed.

Bishop area
Roads open: Hwy 168 West to Lake Sabrina, South Lake Rd, North Lake Rd., Big Pine Canyon Rd., Rock Creek Rd. (Construction is underway, expect 30 minute delays, no weekend or holiday work), Silver and Wyman are open, but 4x4 drivers should expect a soft roadbed. White Mt. Road is open to Sheep Pass, then closed due to snow drifts, White Mountain trailhead (Barcroft Gate) is snow covered. The last mile to Patriarch Grove road is closed due to snow. Expect muddy conditions traveling in the Whites.
Campgrounds open or opening: Crowley Lake (BLM), McGee Creek, Horton (BLM), French Camp, Tuff, Big Meadow, Iris Meadows, Pleasant Valley Pit (BLM), Grandview (no water, no trash service, firewood is limited), Bitterbrush, Big Trees , Bishop Park, Forks , Four Jeffrey, Intake 2, North Lake, Sabrina, Table Mountain, Willow, Big Pine Creek , Upper and Lower Sage Flat, Pine Grove (5/22), Rock Creek Lake Group Camp (6/1), Rock Creek Lake (5/22).
Campgrounds closed: Aspen Group, Bishop Park Group Camp (5/20), Clyde Glacier Group Camp, East Fork, Group Camp Ferguson, Group Camp Nelson, Group Camp Noren, Holiday, Mosquito Flat Backpacker, Mountain Glen, Palisade Glacier Group Camp, The Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest Visitor Center is open Friday-Monday only.

Lone Pine area
Roads open: Foothill Rd., Division Creek Rd., Haiwee Canyon Rd. (flood damage), Horseshoe Meadow Rd, Mazourka Canyon Rd., North Saline Valley Rd., Onion Valley Rd., Sage Flat Rd., Whitney Portal Rd.
Campgrounds open: Boulder Creek RV Resort (Private), Diaz Lake (County), Goodale (BLM), Independence Creek (County), Lone Pine, Upper and Lower Grays Meadow, Onion Valley, Portagee Joe (County), Taboose Creek (County), Tuttle Creek (BLM), Whitney Portal, Whitney Portal Trailhead, Cottonwood Lakes/ Pass Trailhead, Horseshoe Meadow Equestrian.—WG
