A man who walked into the forest just north and west of the S.R. 203 and U.S. 395 junction and left his family behind was found Thursday, April 24, after a brief search and after he called family members to tell them he had hitchhiked to Lone Pine.
The age and residence city of the missing man, who had a "medical condition" according to the sheriff's department, was not disclosed by the Mono County Sheriff's office or the Mono County Search and Rescue Team.
The incident began at dusk, on the afternoon of Thursday, April 24, at approximately 6:05 p.m., according to the sheriff's department.
The county's Search and Rescue (SAR) team and sheriff's deputies were dispatched to mile marker 27 on the southbound side of U.S 395. The man had a pre-existing medical condition and a lack of proper clothing for the expected cold night temperatures.
The SAR team began tracking the subject’s footprints when the man called a family member and reported he had come back to the highway and hitchhiked to Lone Pine. His family met him in Lone Pine.
