Caltrans has announced that it plans on opening the Sonora Pass Highway 108 today, April 24. Long-time locals, according to a Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest press release, recall only one earlier opening date in recent history—April 20, year unknown.
Also as a result of the low snow, the Bridgeport Ranger District, Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, will close the Bridgeport Winter Recreation Area on Thursday, April 25. This closure area is located in the Sonora Pass vicinity off of S.R. 108, and also applies to the Pacific Crest Trail Crossing. The combination of below-average snowfall this winter and recent high temperatures prompted the closure slightly earlier than the previously announced closure date of April 28, according to the press release.
Backcountry permits are available in advance by faxing a request form to the Bridgeport Ranger Station at 760-932-5899. The request form and more information about the Bridgeport Winter Recreation Area are available online at: www.fs.usda.gov/goto/htnf/winterrec .
