Searles asks town to bear down, warns fines are option

April 24, 2014

Mammoth’s bears are up and about early—too early for the grasses and greens they usually rely on for much needed calories in the spring.

The bears also bedded down late due to the late snows. Some of them did not fully bed down at all since the snow did not seal in their dens all winter.

This combination means they are unusually hungry right now and Mammoth’s wildlife specialist Steve Searles said it is time to ramp up efforts to keep the hungry bears out of dumpsters, or face fines.

Dust from China blankets the Eastern Sierra ... again

April 21, 2014

Dust from China’s Gobi Desert has once again made it to the Eastern Sierra, most notably on Sunday, April 20, when the white haze could be seen pouring over Mammoth Pass in the late afternoon and evening.

At first, local air pollution control district authorities thought the haze was smoke or agricultural dust, but then something about it didn’t seem right.

Tioga Pass Road likely to open early May

April 17, 2014

The Tioga Pass Road could open as early as the first or second week of May and officials began plowing the road this week, according to authorities.

“I heard they started plowing today (Tuesday, April 15) and that the work should go quickly, unless there is a large spring season storm,” said Mono County’s Interim Public Works Director Jeff Walters. “The water content in the snow up there is very low; I’m sure Olmsted Point is mostly exposed granite at this time.”

‘Crime of the Century’ in campaign

April 17, 2014

In the labyrinthine halls of the Mammoth Lakes Police Department, they’re calling it “the crime of the century.”

OK, so maybe it was in name only.

Literally.

The name is “Braun” and the case involved a curious case of a missing campaign yard sign supporting MLPD Reserve Officer Ingrid Braun for Mono County Sheriff.

Braun is locked into a (a-hem) brawny race for sheriff against the current office-holder, Sheriff Ralph Obenberger.

Hantavirus season arrives with spring cleaning

April 14, 2014

Mice carry the hantavirus all year, but spring marks the start of the season when the risk of exposure rises, according to a press release from the Mono County Health Department.

Buildings that have been closed and unused all winter often provide habitats for deer mice, and when they are opened in the spring for cleaning, human exposure to the hantavirus is possible.

Although hantavirus infections are relatively rare, it is not unusual to have several cases per year in the Eastern Sierra, and the risk of death is significant, according to the release.
