 Mammoth Mountain Ski Area on Friday claimed 12-16 inches of new snow at mid-day Friday, Dec. 12.

Wind and weather permitting, a ski area spoksperson said the resort expected to expand its terrain this weekend to include Rollercoaster Express, High Five Express, Chair 13, Chair 14, and Chair 23.

Canyon and Eagle lodges are expected to open on Wednesday, Dec 17, the ski area announced.

Bear killed by authorities after repeatedly charging Mammoth man

In an extremely rare occurrence, a black bear had to be killed by Mammoth officials this past weekend after numerous encounters with a Mammoth resident, including the bear charging the man more than once, made the man fear for his physical safety and shoot the bear with a shotgun.

The incident occurred on Sunday, Nov. 30, at approximately 10:20 a.m., when Mammoth Lakes Police officers and Steve Searles, Mammoth Lakes Wildlife Specialist, responded to a report of a bear being shot in Sierra Valley sites, according to a news release from the Mammoth Lake Police Department.

Boy, 11, dies in Bishop house fire

An eleven-year-old Bishop boy, Matthew Duane, Hanson, is dead after a house fire of unknown origin swept through the North Barlow Lane residence he was in on the morning of Saturday, Nov. 22, according to Inyo County Sheriff’s officials.

The incident occurred shortly after 3 a.m. on Nov. 22 when law enforcement was notified of a house fire on North Barlow Lane in Bishop, according to a news release.

Climbing movie "Valley Uprising," Search and rescue fundraiser, Nov 22

Come watch the epic climbing movie, “Valley Uprising” movie at Canyon Lodge this weekend, Saturday, Nov. 22 and help the Mono County Search and Rescue team get the gear and training they need to continue to save lives and help out anyone who needs it in the backcountry.

The party starts at 6 p.m.; the movie starts at 7 p.m. Movie and raffle tickets are available at Mammoth Mountaineering, Footloose Sports, and Mammoth Gear Exchange in Bishop. One complementary raffle ticket per entry, $1 each, $5.00 for 6 tickets, $10 for 12 tickets $15 for 18 tickets, $20 for 25 tickets.

Ribbon cutting for new animal shelter Friday, Nov. 14

The County of Inyo is inviting the community to head to Big Pine Friday morning to help celebrate the completion of a multi-year campaign to build a new animal shelter.

County officials will host a dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony at the new shelter, located on County Road in Big Pine.

The ceremony begins at 11 a.m. and refreshments will be served.

Fire crews will work on prescribed burns while weather holds

Firefighters will continue their annual “pile burns”during the next several weeks; burning the left over tree branches, brush and debris left behind when summer crews thinned the forest around local communities.

According to Inyo National Forest, the work could begin as soon as next week, should conditions allow.

Mammoth brothers set to buy Mammoth Pita Pit

It’s been a long, hard eight years of 60- to 80-hour workweeks, but in early December, brothers Juan and Jesus Hernandez will become the new owners of the Mammoth Pita Pit franchise.

The two Mammoth residents will take the reins from longtime owner Doug Hanna, who recently took a job in Portland with the corporate branch of the company.

The two brothers earned the right to control their own destiny the old-fashioned way: by working their way up from the very bottom of the pay scale to the top through long hours, tenacity, and a lot of nights of little sleep, Hanna said.
