A native of Huntington Beach, Stapp, 69, came to Mammoth as a teacher in 1974.

In his long career in education, Stapp taught elementary and middle school courses but spent the last 17 years of teaching at Mammoth High School.

An author of “Jungle of Lies,” a novel, based on his experiences of the Vietnam War, Stapp taught both English and political science.

He served for 22 years on the Mammoth Lakes Town Council and currently is active on the Board of Directors of Mammoth Lakes Housing.

The fact that he’s running for a county seat surprises even himself, he said.

“Actually, I thought John (Eastman), Matthew (Lehman), and Rick (Wood) were going to run again. I really did. This was a year ago, so I talked to Byng Hunt a year ago, and he said he was pretty sure he wasn’t going to run again, so that’s when I began to focus on county politics.”
