What's open, what's not; latest on local roads, campgrounds

Local campgrounds and roads are slowly being cleared of snow and other debris and opened for the season. Below is a summary of the conditions on the Inyo National Forest's facilities and roads. beginning in the northern part of Mono County and ending with the southern half of the county.

The list is current as of Friday morning, May 9, but if conditions change, there could be some changes to the list, according to officals at the Forest Service. Officials are still working on some systems and roads, so the public is asked to be careful. Estimated opening dates are as accurate as possible, officials said, but the estimated opening dates are still estimates.

Mono Ranger District
Roads open: Bodie (Highway 270), Lundy Canyon, June Lake Loop (Hwy 158), Monitor Pass, Panum Crater, Parker Lake, Sonora Pass (Hwy 108) South Tufa. Hwy 120 E, Tioga Pass (Hwy 120 W).

Roads closed: Saddlebag Road.

Campgrounds open: Big Springs, Gull Lake, June Lake, Lower Lee Vining, Lundy Canyon (county), Oh! Ridge, Silver Lake.

Campgrounds closed: Aerie Crag, Aspen Grove, Big Bend, Bloody Canyon Trailhead CG, Upper Deadman, Lower Deadman, Ellery Lake, Glass Creek, Hartley Springs, Junction, Moraine, Obsidian Flat Group, Reversed Creek (est. opening 5/16), Saddlebag Lake, Sawmill Walk-In, Tioga Lake.

Mammoth Ranger District
Roads closed: Old Mammoth Road to Lakes Basin, Reds Meadow/Devils Postpile (est. opening 5/17). Roads snow-covered: Laurel Canyon. Roads open: Convict Lake, Hot Creek Hatchery, Inyo Craters, Lakes Basin (gated at Horseshoe and Duck Pass TH), Lake Mary, Mammoth Creek, Mammoth Scenic Loop, Sherwin Creek.

Campgrounds closed: Agnew Meadows, Agnew Meadows Group. Agnew Meadows Horse, Coldwater, Lake George, Lake Mary, Minaret Falls, Old Shady Rest (est. opening May 23), Pine City, Pine Glen Overflow, Pine Glen Group, Pumice Flat, Pumice Flat Group, Reds Meadow, Twin Lakes (est. opening May 23), Upper Soda Springs, (BLM), Devils Postpile (NPS).

Campgrounds Open: Brown’s Owens River (private), Convict Lake, Crowley Lake (BLM), New Shady Rest, Mammoth Mtn. RV Park (Private), Sherwin Creek.

Devils Postpile Ranger Station is closed.

White Mountain Ranger District
Roads closed: Rock Creek Road is plowed to the pack station. Rock Creek Re-Construction Project is underway.

Roads Open: Hwy 168 West (to Lake Sabrina), North Lake, South Lake, White Mt. Rd. Big Pine Canyon Road is open to Glacier Lodge.

Campgrounds closed: Clyde Glacier Group Camp, Palisade Glacier Group Camp, North Lake, Sabrina, Aspen Group Camp, East Fork (est. open 5/16), Holiday, Mosquito Flat Backpacker, Palisades Group Camp, Pine Grove, Rock Creek Lake, Rock Creek Lake Group Camp, Upper Pine Grove, Group Camp Ferguson, Group Camp Nelson, Group Camp Noren.

Campgrounds open: Big Meadow (estimated open 5/9), Big Pine Creek, Big Trees, Bishop Park, Bishop Park Group Camp, Bitterbrush, Forks, Four Jeffrey, French Camp, Goodale (BLM), Grandview, no water. No trash service, firewood is limited, Horton (BLM), Intake 2 Walk-in, Intake 2, Iris Meadow (est. open 5/9) McGee Creek, Mountain Glen (est. open 5/9) , Pleasant Valley Pit (BLM), Sage Flat, Upper Sage Flat, Table Mt. (est. open 5/9, res. only), Tuff, Willow (est. open 5/9).

The Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest Visitor Center is closed for the winter.

Mt Whitney Ranger District
Roads Open: Foothill Rd., Division Creek Rd, Haiwee Pass Rd. flood damage, Horseshoe Meadow Rd., Mazourka Canyon Rd., North Saline Valley Rd., Onion Valley Rd, Sage Flat Rd, Whitney Portal Rd.

Campgrounds closed: Cottonwood Lakes/ Pass Trailhead, Horseshoe Meadow Equestrian, Onion Valley

Campgrounds Open: Boulder Creek RV Resort (Private), Diaz Lake (County), Independence Creek (County), Lone Pine, Lower Grays Meadow, Upper Grays Meadow, Portagee Joe (County), Tuttle Creek (BLM), Whitney Portal, Whitney Portal Trailhead.
