The World Snowboarding Championships halfpipe finals went down at Oslo Winterpark where Iouri Podladtchikov (SUI) and Kelly Clark (USA) were officially crowned the 2012 Halfpipe World Champions. …

Elyse Saugstad, the only one of three who survived the avalanche, says she survived because she was wearing an airbag-equipped backpack, which she was able to deploy. The device kept her head and hands above the snow—and is very likely to have been a key factor in her survival. …

Our condolences to the friends and family of Jan Vasliy, a longtime Mammoth resident (now of Canyon Lake), who died of brain cancer last Saturday. Vasliy was the sister of another longtime Eastern Sierran, Karen Ahles, who once owned Giovanni’s restaurant. Vasliy was married to Mammoth local Stan Vasliy whom she met while working at Ocean Harvest 27 years ago. She is survived by her son Sam, by Stan, and many other friends and family including Sue Ebersold, John and Karen Goforth, Tony and Andy Colasardo, and many more, according to Jan’s sister, Lynne Osborne. Services will be held in Sun City on March 5 at St. Vincent’s Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m. …

With winter (or whatever you wanna call it) on its way out, spring is soon approaching. That’s exciting news for those who like to eat at Whoa Nellie Deli! “Spring is just around the corner. That means warm weather and Whoa Nellie Deli,” says the restaurant on Facebook. …

Welcome back, Mammoth High School Gabe Solorio, who is back at work this week after an extended break for health-related issues. And thank you again, Mike Agnitch, former Mammoth High principal, who stepped in to fill Solorio’s shoes before the holidays and stayed for the duration of Solorio’s absence. …

Congratulations to Robin Roberts, Mono County’s new Mental Health Director. Roberts moved to the position from her former post as a psychiatric specialist/alcohol and drug counselor and takes over from former director Ann Gimpel. Gimpel retired last year but has been filling in at the department until a permanent replacement could be found. …

Talk about incredible! A 45-year-old Swedish man was found alive after two months living on nothing but snowmelt. He was trapped in his car by heavy snow that completely obscured his existence. He was found not far from the city of Umea in the north part of Sweden. Doctors said his body went into a sort of hibernation since temperatures were as low as -20 Fahrenheit. …

Happy anniversary to Mono County WIC, A Helping Hand for Families at the Right Time! One year ago (on Feb. 1), the Mono County Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program opened its doors to help serve pregnant women, infants, and children under the age of five who were having trouble making ends meet. Locals Christina Lynn and Kendra Knight are among many who benefitted from the program. Keep it up, we say! …
