It's not exactly Punxatawney, Pa. up here, but tht didn't stop the gang at Gomez's from throwing a Groundhog Day party on Saturday, Feb. 2. In Mammoth, we pay attention to Ollie the Marmot rather than the more famous Punxatawney Phil. Parksman Dennis Rottner, the town’s “Go-to Gadet Man,” says polyurethane and synthetic grass do not make for a good dog experiencefor anyone involved, and with a short staff, he and his parks crew have other things that need more attention than cleaning up after recalcitrant dog owners. …

Wave Rave Snowboard Shop owner Steve Klassenmade good on his promise to participate in a charity boxing event at the SnowSports Industries America (SIA) SnowShowin Denver last week. A video making the rounds shows Klassen edging out Ion Camera’s Braly Joyin a heated match that ended in a controversial tie and eventually went to a crowd decision. Phillip Hertzog, the owner of rival store Mammoth Outdoor Sports, did not take up Klassen’s offer of a match. …

The next window for Yosemite campground reservations, this one for the hot-hot-hot dates of July 15 through Aug. 15, opens up one week from today, on Feb. 15, park officials say. That’s the window that usually offers the best weather, the most trails without snow, and there’s usually still some water in the waterfalls. …

The California Ski and Snowboard Safety resultsare in from the Ski Industry Association’s safety foundation, and Mammoth Mountaingot a solid “C.” That’s in line with all the big Tahoe resorts, with the exception of Sugar Bowl, which got a “C-plus.” At the bottom was Mt.
