Ricky Johnson, 8, participated in the "2013 Offense-Defense 7th Annual All-American Bowl Game" in Houston last month. The camp features 34 teams from all over the U.S. and Canada, with players ranging in age from 7 years old to high school seniors. There were over 680 players present, and 60 of them were in Ricky's 7- 8-year old category. He was at last year's camp in Dallas, and took "Pup" has his nickname. Whoops! Last week we reported in this column that the Pita Pit had changed ownership to Mammoth Mountain, but that was wrong, wrong and wrong. It’s still the same owners. We regret the error, and offer apologies all around…

Downhillers Stacey Cook and Mammoth native Travis Ganong were named to U.S. team competing in the 2013 FIS Alpine Ski World Championships, Feb. 4 to 17 in Schladming, Austria. …

Community members and visitors alike turned out last Friday night to ask questions of Dancing with the Stars celebrity Karina Smirnoff at The Bistro at Snowcreek. In the following days, she hosted a couple of butt-kicking cardio classes. Mono County Supervisor Tim Alpers huffed and puffed his way through it all, and said the elevation affected him more than it did Smirnoff. …

Powder magazine wrote a story about Jeremy Jones’ visit to Mammoth. The author (whose byline reads “The Jaded Local”) writes, “Let’s just say that if you get a chance to see him talk, especially in a ski town where he thinks the audience will get it: go.” …

Mammoth High School athletes this week are bizzy, bizzy bizzy. On Friday (that’s today!), the Nordic Ski Team is competing at Tamarack; the Alpine Ski & Snowboard Teams are at Mammoth Mountain; the girls’ hoopsters take on Mojave, and the girls’ soccer players battle Silver Valley. On Saturday (Feb. 2), the boys’ basketballers play against Mojave. Go Huskies! …

Just for the heck of it: The Who. …

Did everyone see the adorable roadrunner and the Horned Lark under the care of Eastern Sierra Wildlife Care? The group says the roadrunner is doing great and “the lovely female Horned Lark is ready for release as soon as we locate a flock of Horned Larks.” …

 Takeaway from the X Games: Snowboard cross? Um … no. …

They love their 49ers at Mt. Rose, where the $74 lift tickets are slashed to $49 on Super Bowl Sunday. ‘Round here, we call ’em Niners, but no $9 tix are in the mix. …

Gentle reminder for anyone and everyone who is planning on skiing and riding the backcountry this season: Mammoth Mountain Ski Patrol conducts a “Beacon Basin Clinics” every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Clinics are free. Brush up on your transceiver skills so you can stay safe while out exploring. …

On the Village Championships front, next Tuesday’s races are canceled, but the local racers already are sharpening their skis and skills for the next race on Tuesday, Feb. 12. …

Our homies stick together, even in Europe. After finishing the punishing Red Bull Kronplatz Ski Cross last weekend, John Teller and Tyler Wallasch made a surprise visit to downhill racer Stacey Cook, who was busy flying down the slopes at Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy. …

On or around Feb. 15, a football-field sized asteroid will sweep closer to earth than any other asteroid in decades, the science geeks say, closer even than some of our satellites, which orbit above the Earth at about 26,000 miles up. Before you run for the hills—not that that would do any good, mind you—consider this: Asteroid 2012 DA14 will not actually hit the Earth, astronomers say. Whew! …

In other otherworldly news, astronomers also announced a few weeks ago that they had found an Earthlike planet only 12 million light years away circling the star Tau Ceti—the closest potentially Earth-like planet yet discovered. …

Finally, Happy Birthday to all you Aquarians out there, and that would include Susan Morning, Stephen Ingram, Shirley Seydel, and 7-year-old Katie Rose Bernard.
