Rec Commission hears RecStrats schedule, timeline, methodology

Members of the Recreation Commission began to wrap their heads around implementing the town’s recreation vision on Wednesday afternoon.

The commission met with Carl Ribaldo and Austin McInerney of the Strategic Marketing Group, along with facilitator, former Tourism and Recreation director Danna Stroud.

The consulting group walked the commission through the steps and guidelines that would make the so-called “RecStrats” document a viable recreation road map by August.

The consulting team also gave the commission its recommendations for a public workshop schedule that would begin in March and end in June.

Wednesday’s three-hour meeting was not a policy-making session of any sort.

Rather, it was to help kick start a process and lay down the rules of the game going forward.

The consulting team covered such topics as how the final document is to be used, methodologies on collecting data, discussion on public meetings and outreach, etc.

The RecStrats (“Recreation Strategies’) consultants proposed two public workshops per month, starting in March with a “RecStrats 101” workshop, followed the next day by topic-specific issues relating to winter recreation.

In the RecStrats document as it stands now, the commission has agreed to identify six areas (down from seven), or buckets, as Mammoth’s recreation priorities

The workshop schedule is

1. Municipal sports and organized recreation.
2. Winter recreation and trails.
3. Non-winter recreation and trails.
4. Arts and Culture
5. Events
6. High altitude training.

Between the workshops, the consulting team will collate and study public comments, bringing them back to the commission.

It is this process, that will reveal what, exactly, Mammoth’s recreation priorities truly are.

The commission hopes to make educated decisions about the town’s recreation issues and opportunities, as they come up, rather than just guessing.

The six “core strategies” of RecStrats, not in order of priority:

1. Winter Recreation Activities and Trails – To provide the highest quality and variety of winter recreation activities for both local residents and visitors alike.
2. Non-Winter Recreation Activities and Trails – To provide the highest quality and variety of non-winter recreation activities for both local residents and visitors alike.
3. Municipal Sports and Organized Recreation – To provide local residents with high quality recreation facilities and diverse programming that can lead to an improved quality of life for all.
4. Special Events – To provide infrastructure, logistic and facilitation support for regional recreation-based special events.
5. High Altitude Training – To develop the Mammoth Lakes region as one of the premier high altitude summer and winter sports training centers
6. Arts & Culture – To provide infrastructure, logistic and facilitation support for regional arts and culture.
