Mammoth water district escapes drought

April 8, 2013

The Mammoth Community Water district does not so far anticipate water shortages this summer—but that could change.

“The April 1 water content measurement at Mammoth Pass was 82 percent of the long-term average as measured by LADWP,” said Irene Yamashita, a spokeswoman for the district. “We view this level of water content as within the range of a normal runoff year. The snowpack servers as a natural reservoir, slowly feeding water in to the basin throughout the summer. We will continue to monitor the snowpack because unseasonable warm weather or rain storms can quickly deplete our natural reservoir.”

In past dry or drought years, the district has implemented mandatory water restrictions.
