Mammoth cops find mortar round in condo unit; Navy bomb squad, MLPD investigate
A Mammoth condo manager cleaning a unit found a mortar round last Friday, July 27, and it didn't take him long to call the cops.
It didn’t take the cops long to evacuate the building at 2443 Sierra Manor Road, either.
The 81mm round, which both the manager of La Residence Condos and the police initially thought might have been from the arsenal of mortars that Mammoth Mountain Ski Area Avalanche Control uses, turned out to be something else instead.
In a news release sent Friday afternoon, officers from MLPD instead identified it as an illumination round, currently in use by the U.S. military.
Experts from Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) team at the U.S. Naval base at Fallon, Nev., arrived in Mammoth Saturday.
The EOD investigators told police they found two portions of previously fired rounds that had been later attached. The EOD team took possession of the round for further investigation, and to determine if the attached fuse was still live, police said.
Police Chief Dan Watson said the MLPD has identified the owner of the round and criminal charges are pending additional investigation.
