Peter Korfiatis is back at Mammoth Mountain after five years in multiple coaching roles with the U.S. Ski Team, a spokesperson for the Mammoth Mountain Ski Team said Friday.

Korfiatis will be filling a new role with the Mammoth Mountain Ski Team as Performance Director. In the new position, he will be overseeing the implementation, evaluation and further development of Mammoth’s world class athletic programs.

Korfiatis coached for Mammoth 2000-2007.

“I fell in love with not only coaching, but everything about Mammoth - the mountain, the town and the locals who were lucky enough to call Mammoth Lakes their home,” said Korfiatis of his first impressions.

Since 2007, Korfiatis has held a number of positions with the U.S. Ski Team; as Europa Cup Speed Team Assistant Coach, Assistant Coach with the Men’s World Cup Technical Team, Men’s World Cup Speed Team, and lastly as head of the Men’s Europa Cup Team.

Korfiatis led his athletes to multiple championships and Olympic medals.

“During my six years with the Men's U.S. National Ski Team, I gained an incredible amount of on- and off-hill knowledge that I hope to pass on to the Mammoth athletes and staff,” commented Korfiatis.

“Creating world-class athletes requires an enormous amount of resources, financial and community support, sponsorships and access to sports science technology, to name just a few.  Most importantly, it requires a strong team environment dedicated to a primary goal.  My goal for Mammoth is to help foster this type of team environment in order to become the strongest ski and snowboard club in the nation,” said Korfiatis.

Nobody is more excited about the move than Mark Brownlie, Managing Director of Athletics for Mammoth.

"Mammoth Teams are excited to welcome Pete to an already internationally recognized coaching staff," Browlie said. "Pete brings back to Mammoth diverse, elite athletic management skills that are second to none,

"The  timing couldn’t be better as Mammoth Teams and the Mammoth Unified School District partner on elite academic and athletic programming.

Korfiatis will start his new role later this summer, Brownlie said.
