Husky Volleyballers win quick, then fall short

October 15, 2010

The Mammoth Husky volleyballers went the distance against Vasquez on Saturday, but fell short in a five-game match at Mammoth High School.

And it wasn’t just in games – it was in the closeness of the scores.

The Huskies, coming off a quick, three-game victory over Desert Christian on Friday night, took the first game against Vasquez, 25-17 but dropped the next two, 22-25 and 12-25.

“I think we were surprised at how well Vasquez played,” said coach Megan Guffy. “They’ve certainly improved since the last time we played them, and it caught us off guard.”

In the fourth game, Mammoth eked out a 25-23 win, but in the fifth and final game, Vasquez prevailed, 15-10.

The final stats looked like this:

• Arely Bramona-Fierro: 2 aces, 3 digs
•Aly Vanko: 1 ace, 1 dig, 25 assists
•Sam Knadler: 1 ace, 14 digs, 5 kills
•Jessie Harris: 12 digs, 7 kills, 7 blocks
•Kristen Sigmen: 6 digs, 8 kills
•Kate Desalvo: 11 digs, 7 kills
•Hannah Hein: 9 digs, 2 kills, 1 assist, 3 blocks
The Mammoth junior varsity won easily against Desert Christian on Friday night, but lost to Vasquez on Saturday in two straight games.
