Having been absent from competition for over a decade, the Mammoth High School Cheer Team came up big last month.
The nine-member team was directed by Cindie Wormhoudt and coached by Sarah Butner, along with assistant coach Danny Stanton.
Their victory came at Knott’s Berry Farm on Saturday, March 16, earning them some rest. It was their first competition since 2001.
“I’m extremely proud of these girls and of our coaches,” Wormhoudt said.
“We actually perform through three seasons as we work through football, then basketball seasons, and finally through competition. We’ll be taking some well-deserved time off now until the spring, when we’ll be pulling it together for next year with tryouts.
“For now it was a wonderful way to end the year.”
The members of the team were Jade Woo, Alexa Maldanado, Hailey Hugelman, Kayla Thies, Haiya Kofler, Lydia Shultz, Bailey Voss, Sharon Macintosh, and Sierra Hogan.
Their 2-minute, 20-second routine was choreographed by Kofler, an MHS junior.
“It was in the format of dance-cheer-dance which combined moves with stunting,” Kofler said. “The music was a 90s mix designed to catch the judges’ attention.”
She said her favorite moment of the competition was “right before we performed when we were all nervous but completely pumped up. We definitely plan to compete again next year.”View more articles in:
