County property taxes continue to decline

January 25, 2013

Revenues from Mono County property taxes have continued their downward slide, even as property prices across the country begin a slow swing upward.

Although precise numbers will not be available until mid-February when the Mono County Board of Supervisors begins its annual mid-year budget review, according to assistant finance director Roberta Reed, the continuing slide is not a surprise.

“We tend to run behind the national trends,” she said. “When the economy tanked, our property taxes here in the county dropped many months after the rest of the country’s dropped. Now, while the state of California has hit bottom, we are slightly behind.”

But the downward trend has slowed. A few years ago, the property tax revenues were dropping at closer to seven percent lower than the year before. Today, that number is, overall, about 1.4 percent lower, she said.
