Ken and Flossie ‘surprised and very honored
The Mammoth Lakes Rotary Club this week named Ken and Flossie Coulter as the first-ever recipients of the “Service Above Self” award.
The award is presented to an individual or couple who model the motto through their actions in providing outstanding service to our community, said Rick Phelps, president of the noon Rotary.
“This award is given to those who have demonstrated self-sacrifice, compassion for their fellow man, and significant hands-on involvement in one or more endeavors to improve the quality of life of individuals and the community.”
The Rotary will present the honor Feb. 9 at the club’s “WinterFest” fundraiser at Canyon Lodge.
“Many in the community know Ken and Flossie, but few know the depth of their many years of involvement in the community,” Phelps said.
“As volunteers for over 30 years, Ken and Flossie well deserve this award. Ken and Flossie and three other couples were the volunteer founders of the Mammoth Lakes Jazz Jubilee and in the second year, they became the Jubilee’s directors.”
The Coulters also have been involved in many other community activities, including membership of the first CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) class, Flossie’s long-time service in the Lion’s Club and Ken’s service on the Mammoth Unified School Board, as well as being a girls softball coach.
“We were surprised, and very honored, when offered this award by Rotary and look forward to accepting it at the WinterFest event,” commented Ken and Flossie. “We hope we can continue to meet the Service Above Self standard in the future.”
Phelps added, “Ken and Flossie are truly outstanding citizens and the breadth of their contribution to our community clearly meets the criteria for the Rotary Club Service Above Self award.”
WinterFest is an annual celebration and fundraiser sponsored by the Mammoth Lakes Rotary Club, with the proceeds to benefit school and youth activities in Mammoth Lakes.
