Bristlecone Visitors Center closes for the season

November 7, 2012

District Ranger Margaret Wood announced on Tuesday, Nov. 6, that the new Bristlecone Pine Forest Visitor Center has closed for the season due to the impending winter storm.

The prolonged fall season weather has allowed for local and out-of-area visitors to enjoy the new visitor center that opened on September 1. Weather forecasts are predicting very low temperatures and snow so the decision has been made to close the visitor center, located at 10,000 feet, for the winter.

Fesko took the seat with 53.7 percent of the vote against Peters' 46.3 percent. The vote totals do not include provisional ballots which will be counted this week, but election officials said Wednesday that the several hundred provisional ballots still uncounted are not likely to change the final outcome of the District 4 race, given Fesko's lead.

New (sort of) nightclub to open in Auld Dubliner space in Village

November 6, 2012

Mammoth has a new nightclub, right where an old one used to be.

The space that was occupied by The Auld Dubliner in the Village will become a new club venue under the management of Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, according to Mammoth Mountain CEO Rusty Gregory.

The re-opening of the venue, presumably under a new name, will offer the kind of venue aimed for young singles, as did the old Hyde Lounge.

Last month, the ski area announced it would open a new restaurant, “Campo Mammoth,” in the old Hyde Spot.

Cage: ‘He fit the mold perfectly’

When Greg Norby announced this week that he was resigning from his post as the Mammoth Community Water District to move closer to family, no one was clapping.

Without water, a town, a community is nothing. Norby has been at the helm of the small but critical government agency for almost four years.

Tom Cage, one of the district’s board of directors, wishes it were 20.

What's Up, Up Here? November 2-8, 2012

November 2, 2012

Snowfall forecast? We go with Kittregde/P3/Chevron/Hertz prognosticator Tom Cage, here for more than three decades, who predicts 73 percent of normal, which isn’t great, but not bad. “It’s strictly a gut feeling,” sez he. Reason for reasonable optimism? “At least it didn’t snow in September; that’s the kiss of death.” …

Fido & Me — GoSniff

November 2, 2012

“I’m not sure how to work this suction-cup mount,” Fido said.

“Well, it’s not going to fit on the end of your snout. That’s just a hunch, but I think it’s a good one.”

“Arummphh. Uraggh.”

“Fido, just what in the world are you doing?”

“I have a new GoSniff, but I can’t get it to work right.”

“GoSniff? What in the world is a GoSniff?”

“It’s like a GoPro, but those things are useless for dogs.”
