Ross wins at Squaw, Mancuso third
Mammoth Olympic ski racer Stacey Cook ran a great race last week at Squaw Valley, but came up short by the merest of margins.
Racing on Friday, March 22, Cook crossed the line just one one-hundreth of a second behind winner Laurenne Ross.
Veterans show up big in penultimate race
Some might say winter disappears with the vernal equinox, others may pinpoint Easter.
But in Mammoth, spring doesn’t happen until the racers in the Village Championships are through with their business, and that means April 10 this year.

Perfect conditions for Sixth Annual race
While Eastern Sierra and California athletes filled the Mammoth Biathlon racing rosters, a pair of elite athletes from New Hampshire and Washington dominated the top tier of the competition last weekend.
Katrina Howe, a New England biathlete, and Casey Smith, from Winthrop, Wash., took the top elite spots on Sunday, March 24, at the sixth annual Mammoth Winter Biathlon.

Riffel, Montforte win in skicross
Mammoth athletes were just about everywhere this past week, from British Columbia to the Czech Republic, from Italy to Germany, from Sugar Bowl to right here at home.
Leading the charge were Madeline Riffel and Nicolo Montforte, who came away with NOR-AM Cup gold medals in skicross at Panorama, B.C., last weekend, March 16-17.
Vintage races follow dual giant slalom
It was Retro Day on Mammoth Mountain Tuesday, when racers in the Village Championships held their fifth annual “Vintage Races.”

Teller, Cook, and Mammoth High School racers end on high notes
The ski and snowboard racing seasons began drawing to a close last week, with Mammoth athletes turning in one of their finest seasons ever.

Teens on the road without parents are not normally fixated on healthy food choices, but as members of the Mammoth Mountain Ski and Snowboard Teams learned recently, they ought to be.
The reason might be critical to a race, such as the 2010 Olympic Men’s Downhill, in which a mere two seconds separated the gold medal winner and the 28th-place finisher.

U.S. women’s downhill coach has best year ever
Mammoth athletes John Teller, Tyler Wallasch, Madeline Riffel, and Trevor Jacob brought home gold and silver hardware and three national titles after competing at the 2013 Sprint U.S. Grand Prix held March 1-2 at Canyons Resort, Utah.
Jacob took the top spot in the Snowboard Cross and the U.S. Championship title after beating out the competition on a tight course with wet, rutted snow for his first career win.

‘Dinosaurs’ topple the leaders in VCs
For the first time since the opening race of last year, Andie’s Flying Circus was defeated in the Village Championships.
Racing a dual giant slalom on Tuesday, Feb. 26, the Circus fell to members of the Miramar Dinosaurs, but there were a couple of key caveats involved.

2012 Kittredge Cup, once delayed, takes center stage
High winds blasted Mammoth Mountain last weekend, but the weather conditions did not stop the tots.
It was close, though.
The 2012 Kittredge Cup was cancelled on Dec. 27 due to extreme weather conditions, so when the winds at the top of Broadway were clocked at 124 mph on Saturday, Feb. 23, the question on everyone’s mind was “what is the weather going to be like tomorrow?”
