Bernadette Lovato named new Manzanar superintendent

April 22, 2014

SAN FRANCISCO – Bernadette Lovato has been selected as the new superintendent for Manzanar National Historic Site in California. Lovato is currently the district manager for the Bureau of Land Management Carson City District Office, overseeing 4.8 million acres in northwestern Nevada.

Lovato will begin her new position in June, replacing former superintendent Les Inafuku, who retired.

UPDATED: Meb Keflezighi, formerly a member of the Mammoth Track Club and a fixture in Mammoth distance running, won the Boston Marathon on Monday, April 21.

Dust from China blankets the Eastern Sierra ... again

Dust from China’s Gobi Desert has once again made it to the Eastern Sierra, most notably on Sunday, April 20, when the white haze could be seen pouring over Mammoth Pass in the late afternoon and evening.

At first, local air pollution control district authorities thought the haze was smoke or agricultural dust, but then something about it didn’t seem right.

Tioga Pass Road likely to open early May

The Tioga Pass Road could open as early as the first or second week of May and officials began plowing the road this week, according to authorities.

“I heard they started plowing today (Tuesday, April 15) and that the work should go quickly, unless there is a large spring season storm,” said Mono County’s Interim Public Works Director Jeff Walters. “The water content in the snow up there is very low; I’m sure Olmsted Point is mostly exposed granite at this time.”

‘Crime of the Century’ in campaign

In the labyrinthine halls of the Mammoth Lakes Police Department, they’re calling it “the crime of the century.”

OK, so maybe it was in name only.

Literally.

The name is “Braun” and the case involved a curious case of a missing campaign yard sign supporting MLPD Reserve Officer Ingrid Braun for Mono County Sheriff.

Braun is locked into a (a-hem) brawny race for sheriff against the current office-holder, Sheriff Ralph Obenberger.
