A 63-year-old overdue hiker, a Merced man missing since May 18, was found in the Reds Meadow area Sunday, May 19, after spending the night in the valley and getting lost while trying to reach Bishop.
On Saturday, May 18, at approximately 8 p.m., Mono County Sheriff’s Dispatch received a call regarding an overdue hiker in the Horseshoe Lake area, according to a sheriff's department news release.
"A 63-year-old hiker from Merced was reported overdue by his son when he didn’t return after a 3-4 hour hike," the news release states.
Mono County has hired a new County Administrative Officer (CAO), according to the Mono County Board of Supervisors.
According to a news release issued by the board of supervisors on May 21, Tuesday, Jim Leddy, the current Deputy County Administrator/Community and Government Affairs Manager for Sonoma County, will begin his service in Mono County on June 4, with a salary of $160,000.
"The selection follows an extensive recruitment process begun in January and guided by the Board’s efforts to strengthen strategic planning for the county," the news release states.
County of Mono could save about $2.8 million

Measure R tax funds would pay for infrastructure
A community garden at Mammoth Creek Park, funded with Measure R recreation-based tax dollars, received warm support from the town’s Recreation Commission this past week.
What it did not get, however, was a full-fledged blessing in terms of actual dollars.

The cables on Half Dome in Yosemite National Park will be in place and open for the season on Friday, May 24, weather permitting, park officials announced this past week.
Chris Smallcomb of the National Weather Service in Reno will give a talk about "The Devils Windstorm: The Great Tree Blowdown of 2011" as part of the Sierra Nevada Aquatic Research Laboratory (SNARL) Lecture Series on Tuesday, May 21, 7 p.m., at the Green Church at the intersection of U.S. 395 and Benton Crossing Road.

It’s time to renew Town of Mammoth Lakes dog licenses for the upcoming fiscal year. Join us for our annual license sale/vaccination clinic in the Police Department parking lot on Saturday, June 1 from 4 to 5:30 pm.
If your dog does not need a rabies vaccination update, you can just purchase a license for $20 if your animal is spayed/neutered or $50 if it is not. You don’t need to bring your pet to the clinic unless it needs a vaccination update. Dr. Gaylon TeSlaa and the staff of Alpen Veterinary clinic will be on hand with low cost vaccinations for both dogs and cats.
The 2013 Fire Season in Yosemite National Park will begin on Monday, May 20, park officials said Friday in a news release.

Five-year capital improvements plan unveiled
The airport, town streets, and town trails would get the lion’s share of capital improvement money in the 2013-14 fiscal year, according to a draft of the town’s five-year spending program.
The program, drafted by Public Works Director Ray Jarvis, was handed up to the Town Council at its meeting on Wednesday evening, May 15.

Victim of $627K budget shortfall
For the second year in a row, the Fourth of July fireworks show at Crowley Lake is facing elimination because of a Town of Mammoth Lakes budget shortfall.
The show, which is budgeted for $34,650, would be eliminated in a new set of 10 “balancing recommendations” that the town staff put before the Town Council at its meeting on Wednesday, May 15.

The Mono County Sheriff's department on Tuesday, May 14, identified a man who was found dead in a Jacuzzi Sunday night, May 12.
