The male victim of an apparent suicide attempt Thursday morning at the Mono Basin Visitor's Center has been flown to Reno for further treatment, according to the Mono County Sheriff's Department.
According to Jennifer Hansen, the public information officer for the sheriff's department, at about 8 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 31, the sheriff's department received a call regarding an unresponsive male in the parking lot of the Visitor's Center, which is located just north of Lee Vining, off of U.S. 395.

Giant blocks of snow have been delivered to 19 businesses and organizations along June Lake's Main Street for the community-wide Snow Sculpture Competition this Saturday afternoon, Feb. 2âall part of the inaugural June Lake Winter Festival & Triple Threat Triathlon, Feb. 1-3.
The Mono County Board of Supervisors appointed Lynda Salcido as âActing County Administrative Officer (CAO),â Tuesday, Jan. 29.
A long-term county employee, Salcido is also Mono Countyâs Director of Public Health, a position she has held for 13 years. She will serve in the additional capacity of Acting CAO following the last day of employment of the countyâs current CAO, James Arkens on Feb. 3, and until an âInterim CAOâ is recruited and appointed, which may take a few weeks. Arkens was recently hired as CAO for Sutter County in central California.

Exterior has not been touched in 23 years
Vons supermarket, characterized by one town official as “the center of the universe” in Mammoth, is about to undergo its first major revamping.
Starting in April and lasting through Labor Day, the supermarket would get a new exterior and move its pharmacy and Starbucks franchises to new locations, according to plans for the $4.5 million project.

No deaths, vaccines are still available
Flu season in Mono County has officially begun.
The number of influenza cases steadily increased this past week, according to Mono County’s Public Health Officer Dr. Rick Johnson, and along with it, emergency room visits and hospitalizations.
One of the Mono County Sheriff’s Department deputies, Wesley Hoskins, recently graduated at the top of his Riverside County Sheriffs Academy class and is now beginning a rigorous field-training program, according to the sheriff’s department.
Deputy Hoskins was hired and promoted through the ranks of the Mono County Sheriff’s Department.
After beginning his work at the department as a Public Safety Officer in 2009, which included the duties of jailer and dispatcher, Hoskins was promoted to deputy sheriff in July.

When Mammoth became a town, the town founders were adamant in their opposition to having mobile food trucks in town.
Whoops.
Since Mammoth incorporated in the mid-1980s, both the nature of mobile food trucks—the infamous “roach coaches” of the day—and California state law have come a long way.
