A group of Mammoth cross-country ski experts, including Olympian Nancy Fiddler, will be holding the popular â€śMasters Classâ€ť cross-country ski training program this winter at the Tamarack Cross Country Ski Center.
Separate classes will be held for beginners, intermediate skiers, and advanced skiers, along with shorter classes for winter conditioning.
The classes will begin after Thanksgiving and continue into the spring, according to Jane Lester, one of the instructors.
Around here, we call it "The Granite Curtain," and when it falls, it means all three major passes to the West Side of the Sierra Nevada are closed.
On Thursday, Nov. 21, the last of the three passes that was openâ€”S.R. 89 over Monitor Passâ€”closed because of snow.
Motorists from the Eastside who are traveling westbound toward the Northern California coast, The Bay Area or any of the Central Valley destinations, now are advised to use S.R. 88 and Luther Pass near South Lake Tahoe to access Westside destinations.
A push to gain National Monument status for the Bodie Hills is underway, led by a 52-year-old veteran in environment and trails conservation.
Jeff Hunter, whose work in conservation has been primarily in the American southeast, said his work in the Eastern Sierra, which is backed by the 14 partner groups that include the Sierra Alliance, the Sierra Club and the Colorado-based Conservation Lands Foundation, would give an economic jolt to Bridgeport and Lee Vining, while protecting the Bodie Hills “as they are.”
The Mammoth Unified School District and its Independent Learning Center this season will clear the $1 million mark in donations from the Mammoth Community Foundation and the locally based NOW Foundation, the nonprofits announced jointly this past week.
With an anticipated $300,000 coming into the coffers this season, it has taken just three years to clear the milestone mark.
