The future of a land trade that Mammoth Mountain Ski Area is pursuing for land at the base of Main Lodge may be at risk, according to Mono County Supervisor Vikki Bauer.
A proposed land trade with the U.S. Forest Service for the parcel of federal land needs the approval of Congress, since the forest service does not have enough land to trade to match the value of the property, she said. Congress must get involved when it takes a certain amount of cash to make up the difference in value and land available.
Mammoth Lakes Tourism on Thursday announced a partnership with Nalgene, the American Park Network, and Brita Hydration Station on a plastic bottle trade-in program in support of the Eastern Sierra Interpretive Association (ESIA).

Mammoth is not the only place in the county facing increasing bear problems these days, as the dry summer forces hungry bears out of the woods and into human communities.
Walker residents found that out first hand recently, when they tried to drop off their garbage at the county dump.
At least one bear has been active at the dump this year, to the point that the dump has been closed a few times to avoid human and bear encounters.

The Gateway âWelcomeâ project is $108,395 over budget estimates, but it still is moving forward.
Construction could begin as early as September for the two signs on both sides of S.R. 203 after the Town Council Wednesday evening approved more public art funds to the project.
Those funds are earmarked and not a part of the general fund, the council emphasized in explaining the move, although that did not mollify the concerns of Councilmember Joe Bacon.

Town rules regulators say theyâve received a number of complaints about tent sales in Mammothâan old tune in a new bottle.
Specifically, Mammoth community development director Mark Wardlaw said most of the complaints were directed toward Mammoth Sporting Goods on Old Mammoth Road and at the new Value Sports zone in the Mammoth Luxury Outlet shopping mall.
Wardlaw made his remarks at Wednesdayâs Town Council meeting.
âThey do have permits,â he said, âbut they are outside complianceâ rules.
The council took no action on the matter.
A 10-year-old boy was pronounced dead and a 6-year-old boy remained missing following an incident near the Vernal Fall Footbridge in Yosemite National Park on Wednesday, Aug. 15, according to park officials.
A family group, from Southern California, was in the Merced River near the Vernal Fall Footbridge Wednesday afternoon around 3 p.m. They had begun their hike at the Happy Isles Trailhead and hiked about one mile, where they stopped at the footbridge.
The Town Council put a firm âholdâ on Measure R (recreation) and Measure U (recreation, arts and culture) funds until the town discovers where it is at in terms of its ongoing application for municipal bankruptcy protection.
The move by the council was at the behest of Councilmember Jo Bacon. It passed unanimously.
