Homicide "person of interest" living in Mammoth arrested on outstanding warrant

A Mammoth man was arrested on Oct. 29 on an outstanding warrant as a "person of interest" in an Orange County homicide case, according to Mammoth Lake Police. According to the police, the man, Jose Cardenas Zuniga, 38, was living in Mammoth under an alias, and was arrested at his place of employment in Mammoth at about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Inyo prepares for weekend snowfall

The Inyo National Forest this past week began preparations for road closures in the wake of a possible weekend storm.

Specifically, the forest may implement winter closures for roads that access the Reds Meadow Valley and Mammoth Lakes Basin areas of the Inyo National Forest.

For the Reds Meadow Valley Road, the forest will close the gates to Reds Meadow Valley at the end of the day on, Thursday, Oct. 30.  

If snow falls and accumulates on the road on Friday, the road will remain closed for the winter.

Mono Supes approve Conway Ranch plan

The Mono County Board of Supervisors this past week approved a Conway Ranch plan, ending 20 years of wrangling over the fate of the lush area nestled at the southern base of Conway Summit and above Mono Lake.

“This is a point in county history that we can be proud of,” said Supervisor Byng Hunt after the board approved creating a “conservation easement” to protect the land “in perpetuity.”

Yosemite eyes 'hikes' in gate, entrance fees for 2015

It’s not the “hike” that most visitors have in mind when they pay a visit to Yosemite National Park.

In this case, it’s a “fee hike” that could go into effect early next year, park officials announced Monday, Oct. 20, in a news release.

Yosemite National Park is proposing a new fee structure that would single vehicle entrance fees from $20 to $30 for a seven-day pass. 

The park’s annual pass would increase from $40 to $60.

Volleyball Huskies top Desert Christian for first time in four years

The Mammoth Huskies this past week placed themselves firmly in contention for another possible Desert Mountain League title.

Playing with a new lineup and with a fair measure of desperation, the Huskies on Friday, Oct. 17, did what no other Mammoth team had done in four years.

Led by Sierra Gilfoy. Callie Mowat and Amanda Kirkeby, the Huskies defeated Desert Christian in straight sets, 25-21, 25-22 and 25-23 at Mammoth High School.

Huskies look for Homecoming boost

Maybe Homecoming can be a charm for the Mammoth Huskies.

Having lost three straight games—the latest a 37-8 mashup at Excelsior (Victorville) on Friday, Oct. 17—the Dogs come back to Gault/McClure Stadium for a collision with Desert Mountain League rival Vasquez on Friday night.

It is Homecoming, and whatever boost that might give the Huskies, they’ll take in.

In their three consecutive defats, Mammoth has been outscored 95-20, the big one a 50-12 defeat at home to Desert on Oct. 10.

Chip White is back, not that he ever really left, exactly.

The former U.S. Olympic Team ski coach, who has lived in Mammoth for 36 years, this past week signed on as the head Alpine coach of the Mammoth Mountain Ski and Snowboard Team (MMST).

Chip White is back, not that he ever really left, exactly.

The former U.S. Olympic Team ski coach, who has lived in Mammoth for 36 years, this past week signed on as the head Alpine coach of the Mammoth Mountain Ski and Snowboard Team (MMST).

White brings 18-years of World Cup and Olympic coaching experience with the U.S. Ski Team and is a long-time member of the Mammoth Lakes community.

Mammoth Fire Dept.: It's that time to check wood burning appliances

With the change in the seasons, the Mammoth Lakes Fire Protection District this week reminded all users of wood burning appliances to make sure their heating system is ready for the upcoming winter.

There are numerous activities that one needs to perform on the system to give you heat and a winter free of problems. The National Fire Protection Association reports that a third of the people using wood type heating have never cleaned or inspected their chimneys or stovepipes, or knew that they needed to.
