Local smoke possible from prescribed burns

The Mammoth and Mono Lake Ranger Districts of the Inyo National Forest are planning to continue several prescribed fire projects for habitat improvement and hazardous fuels reduction. Fire crews are taking advantage of recent precipitation that has provided safe and favorable burning conditions.

The Aqueduct Prescribed Fire is planned to begin either Thursday, Feb. 5 or Friday, Feb. 6; conditions permitting.

It should take two days to complete.

This 120-acre project in the Jeffrey pine forest is east of U.S. 395 near Bald Mountain (northeast of Deadman Summit).

TOWN HALL MEETING, Thursday March 19 at 5 p.m. at the Grand Sierra Lodge

The Mammoth Lakes Police-Community Hispanic Advisory Committee (MLPCHAC) has scheduled its ninth Town Hall meeting for Thursday, March 19 at 5 pm in the Emerald Room at the Grand Sierra Lodge, 1111 Forest Trail.
Refreshments, childcare, and interpreters will be provided.

Speakers at the Town Hall will include representatives from the following:
• Members of the Mexican Consulate
• Immigration Attorney Lazaro Salazar

U.S. Grand Prix in Mammoth this week; $400K up for grabs

Move over.becasued the pros are all in town for the U.S. Grand Prix—a top tier snowboarding and freeskiing event featuring both halfpipe and slopestyle competitions.

It is ongoing, February 4-7, with the top U.S. Snowboarders and Freeskiers ready to take on the Super Duper Halfpipe, among other Slopestyle featrues.

No surprise; Yosemite hikes entrance, camping fees

As expected, Yosemite National Park announced last week that entrance fees and campground fees will increase beginning March 1.

The new fee structure includes modifications to the October 2014 draft proposal based on public input.

During the civic engagement period, the park received 2,430 e-mails in response to the proposal, 1,222 comments on the park’s Facebook page, and 16 mailed letters, park officials said.

'Raise the Roof' hockey tournament this week; fundraiser for rink roof

The "Raise The ‘Raise The Roof" fundraising campaign on behalf of the Mammoth Ice Rink starts Tuesday, Feb. 3 and continues on Thursday and Sunday with men’s hockey action.

At stake is nothing less than “The Guzzle Cup” and a $100 bar tab at Grumpy’s.

Braun names new undersheriff; veteran LAPD officer awaits Supes approval

In her first major move as Mono County Sheriff, Ingrid Braun has tapped a veteran Los Angeles Police Department officer as her undersheriff.

He is Michael Moriarty, who will join Braun from his current position as Chief of Investigators at the Riverside County District Attorney's Office. Previously, he logged 31 years as a member of the LAPD.

He, Braun and County Administrative Officer Jim Leddy agreed to a three-year deal, starting Feb. 1.

Mammoth endures 'unprecedented' broadband demand'

Demand on Internet broadband service during the 2014-15 Christmas-New Year holiday period jumped an astonishing 1,700 percent from the same period in 2013-14, according to the town’s Information Technology director. 

That is not a misprint. 

Nate Greenberg, who oversees IT for both the town of Mammoth Lakes and Mono County, told the Mono County Board of Supervisors this past week that the increased demand took just about everybody by surprise.
