Increasing technical rescue competence

The Technical Rescue Instructional Project (TRIP) is a local nonprofit aiming to increase technical rescue competence in the recreational climbing community and public safety sector through the provision of affordable rescue training.
While TRIP has developed a standardized curriculum, its trainings have the feel of being custom tailored to the skill sets of the student and range from safe rappelling practices to advanced casualty rescues in completely vertical environments.

It’s been a dismal winter.

As of Thursday afternoon when the Mammoth Times went to press, the snowfall at Mammoth Pass was at 48 percent of normal for the year. The water content in that snowfall was even lower—20 percent of normal. The cumulative Owens River Basin snowfall is at about 35 percent of normal. The state gives the central Sierra, where Mammoth Lakes lies, an average of about 28 percent of normal for April 1 this year.

Whooping cough cases increase, dozens being treated or investigated

Several new cases of whooping cough cases in young children in the Mammoth/Crowley Lake area has been confirmed as of this morning, and the Mono County Health Department is also investigating and/or treating several dozen people who are suspected to have the disease, according to county health officials.
A total of about 100 people in the area have so far been affected by the disease in some fashion, whether they are caregivers, victims or included in the investigation.

Mammoth Creek fight will stay in Mono County

The fight over Mammoth Creek’s water will stay in Mono County and the Mammoth Community Water District will get some help from the county and the Town of Mammoth Lakes in that fight.

At a court hearing Thursday in Mammoth, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and the water district agreed to keep the argument in Mono County, with the caveat, proposed by DWP, that a “neutral” judge was assigned to the cases from now on.
