What a difference a year makes

Mammoth is at about 50 percent of normal precipitation for the year

In one short month, Mammoth and the Eastern Sierra broke out of a year-long drought and landed squarely in the middle of an average winter—at least so far.

As of Jan. 2, Mammoth Pass was at about 50 percent of its average moisture for the entire winter, and at about 100 percent of the average amount of moisture it normally gets as of that date, according to Los Angeles Department of Water and Power data.

Stretching from Tioga Pass south to Olancha, taking in every peak in the Sierra between, the giant Inyo National Forest pretty much dominates everything that does—and does not—happen in the southern half of the Eastern Sierra.

This week, this land of granite peaks and mile-high meadows lost its most familiar and constant voice when Public Affairs Officer Nancy Upham retired Jan. 3.

Questions remain as to who pays, who profits

A new bike festival is officially on track for Sept. 4 to 6 in Mammoth, but it will not be a done deal until financing is solidified.

The “Kamikaze Bike Games” is to be organized and hosted by Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, with proceeds set to go to the Mammoth Mountain Community Foundation.

Chemotherapy Center grand opening at Mammoth Hospital

Mammoth Hospital announced the opening of a newly renovated and redesigned Chemotherapy Infusion Center, to facilitate access to cancer care services in the Eastern Sierra.

The new chemotherapy center was made possible by donations from Dave and Roma McCoy, as well as Medical Imaging Director, Dr. Yuri Parisky in collaboration with Dancing with the Docs.  

Interior designer Nicole Cavanaugh of Cavanaugh Design Group and Nancy Ballard, Executive Director of Rooms That Rock 4 Chemo volunteered their time to bring the outdated room to life.

Some rural dwellings can now be built with less red tape

The Mono County Board of Supervisors recently passed a “Limited Density Owner Built Rural Dwellings,” ordinance which allows “for the legal construction of seasonally or permanently occupied residential dwellings located in rural areas and that are solely occupied as the residence of the owner or the owner’s family.”

Mammoth Hospital receives national accreditation

Mammoth Hospital achieved national accreditation from DNV Healthcare, the only hospital accreditation program approved by the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) that integrates the ISO 9001 Quality Management System with the Medicare Conditions of Participation.

DNV’s National Integrated Accreditation for Healthcare Organizations (NIAHO) accreditation program requires hospitals to evaluate the continuum of patient care throughout its facilities and take measured steps to improve when it is warranted.

Rapper Frank Ocean arrested for marijuana possession near Tom's Place

On Monday, Dec. 31 at approximately 4:30 p.m., a Mono County Deputy Sheriff, with the assistance of a California Highway Patrol Officer, observed a black BMW traveling at a high rate of speed, southbound on U.S. 395 near Tom’s Place.

The vehicle was stopped by the deputy. As the deputy approached the vehicle, a strong odor of marijuana came from inside the car. Christopher Breaux, aka Frank Ocean, 25, Beverly Hills, had a small bag of marijuana on his person. Breaux was cited for possession of marijuana and released.
