Dry winter, early spring set up fishing season for success
This year’s Fishing Opening Weekend looks to be one of the best in many years, after a dry winter and warm and early spring have allowed access to more lakes and streams than usual, experts said this past week.

Plowing began last week; Opening Day deadline set for some roads
High temperatures combined with a light snowpack will allow for an early start to plowing area roads this spring, according to the U.S. Forest Service, Inyo National Forest.
Here’s the latest on some of the road conditions for the most popular areas near Mammoth, according to a forest service news release.
Residents pay $15 a cord, many areas already snow free
The new firewood season opens May 1, according to national forest officials.
Initial supplies of firewood can be found at Antelope, Smoke, Dry Creek, Hartley, Oh! Ridge and Reversed Peak Forest Management Areas located on the fuelwood map, according to an Inyo National Forest news release.

Spring forecast not so hot; summer numbers iffy
Despite an early Easter that presented somewhat of a roadblock, Mammoth’s ski season effectively ended on a robust note, according to figures released last week by Mammoth Lakes Tourism.
The tourism numbers from Mammoth were better, overall, than destinations in the mountain west.

April 24th
Caltrans has announced that it plans on opening the Sonora Pass Highway 108 today, April 24. Long-time locals, according to a Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest press release, recall only one earlier opening date in recent history—April 20, year unknown.
April 23rd
The new firewood season opens May 1, according to national forest officials.
Initial supplies of firewood can be found at Antelope, Smoke, Dry Creek, Hartley, Oh Ridge and Reversed Peak Forest Management Areas located on the fuelwood map, according to an Inyo National Forest press release.
"Other areas may be opened later this season," the press release states. "Not all open areas may be snow-free at this time.

Lakes Basin: The Town of Mammoth Lakes (TOML) began plowing roads in the Mammoth Lakes Basin on Wednesday, April 17 and the Basin is expected to be open to vehicles for the Fishing Opener weekend.
Campgrounds will not be open.
Visitors should stay aware of hazards in the area, such as wind damaged trees and soft lake ice that is particularly dangerous during this season.
Guide Dogs to star at library
It’s a dog’s life, at least on Monday, April 29, at the Mammoth Lakes Library.
An informational meeting about Pet Partners (formerly Delta Society) therapy animal program, and/or with Guide Dogs for the Blind puppy raising is the subject of the program.
After years of distrust, a new start
The festering debate between Mono County and Town of Mammoth Lakes over how to deal with garbage got an infusion of fresh air last week.
Mammoth’s town manager took the reins and asked both sides to focus on one thing and one thing only—the numbers.

Trails group suggests NGO management
Mammoth’s trails system, much of which lies within the Inyo National Forest, would be managed by a non-governmental organization (NGO) under a proposal by the Mammoth Lakes Trails and Public Access Foundation.
The Inyo’s response: Fat chance.
The Town’s response: Ditto.

“Wow, not a single joke in there, except for the title,” Fido said.
“You expected a comedy?”
“I figured “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woof!” was about dogs. It’s in the title.”
“Oh Fido, you have been misled once again. It’s not ‘woof!’ as in a bark, it’s ‘Woolf’ as in a name.”
“They should have made that clear. I am easily misled.”

Dear Editor,
The students and staff of Mammoth Elementary School would like our community to know about a wonderful event that was made available to us by the Mammoth Mountain Ski Area.
This past Monday and Wednesday, our 2nd-5th grade students were welcomed at the Mountain to enjoy a day of skiing or snowboarding, completely free of charge.
