Leading the charge were Madeline Riffel and Nicolo Montforte, who came away with NOR-AM Cup gold medals in skicross at Panorama, B.C., last weekend, March 16-17.

Community struggles to find economically viable solution

Arsenic has been declared a hazard to human health, even at extremely low levels, and discovering arsenic in drinking water is a problem no water district wants to have.

According to the state of California, Bridgeport residents are drinking water from a municipal water system that is deemed to have arsenic at higher levels than the state allows.

What's Up, Up Here? Mar. 15-21

March 19, 2013

Just when we thought everyone knew about us, more or less, here comes National Geographic, which named Mammoth among the Top 10 “emerging ski towns.” We’re not sure it that is a compliment or not. Reno’s on the list, too, although for us, it’s hard to think of Biggest Little Cityas a ski town. …

Garbage woes persist

March 19, 2013

Town, county can’t agree how to solve long-term problem

Not long ago, Mono County taxpayers were sending a decent chunk of their hard-earned cash to a garbage disposal enterprise fund that was draining the county coffers to the tune of thousands of dollars a week, every week, when the recession hit the region.

March 19, 2013

Next meeting scheduled April 4 in Bishop

Almost everything people see in almost every direction on the Eastside is part of the huge Inyo National Forest—about two million acres of granite peaks, forest, sagebrush meadows and fast-dropping creeks that water an otherwise desert landscape.

The forest stretches from the Conway Summit area south to Lone Pine, then west until it hits the crest of the Sierra.

‘Obamacare’ could double number of people eligible for Medi-Cal in county

March 19, 2013

The Affordable Health Care Act goes into full effect in January 2014 and that means big changes in Mono County

When the Supreme Court upheld the Affordable Care Act last year, it put the county’s counties and states on notice.

Play, or figure out another way to cover the uninsured.

The State of California decided to play—one of the first and largest states to wholeheartedly embrace “Obamacare.”

He or she also must leap tall buildings in a single bound, and demonstrate superhuman strength, speed, stamina, invulnerability, freezing breath, super hearing, multiple extrasensory and vision powers, longevity, flight, intelligence, and regeneration.

Comments on the Mammoth Trails website

March 19, 2013

I have two comments on last week’s article titled “Mammoth Trails website springs to life.”

The Mammoth Lakes Trails System Coordinating Committee June 28, 2012, minutes note the total cost of the trails website as “approximately $225,000.”

Measure R funds and Town General Funds were the major contributor, along with some private funds.

That amount, plus the approximately $30,000 budgeted for first year maintenance totals more than one quarter of a million dollars.
