RAW: Rim Fire forces closure of Tioga Road from White Wolf to Crane Flat

A portion of the Tioga Road, from Crane Flat to White Wolf, will be temporarily closed to all vehicular traffic beginning Wednesday, Aug. 28, at 12 noon, according to Yosemite National Park officials.

The Tioga Road will remain open east of White Wolf to the Tioga Pass Entrance.

The closure is necessary for firefighters to perform fire suppression activities along the road, officials said in a news release.

RAW: Suddenlink says Mammoth customers will have faster broadband service as of Tuesday, Aug. 27

Suddenlink today increased speeds for its most popular residential Internet services in Mammoth Lakes, with no added charge, and also introduced a new 30-Megabit per second (Mbps) speed option, according to an Aug. 27 news release.

The company also announced that installation appointment times are now available for new Suddenlink high-speed Internet customers, as well as existing customers.

Mammoth's water district will appeal Casa Diablo geothermal plant expansion plan

Mammoth's local water district is filing an appeal of the environmental document outlining the plans for a sharp expansion of the Casa Diablo geothermal plant's electric power generation capacity. The plant is located east of Mammoth Lakes, off of Casa Diablo Road.

RAW: Fire near Bodie 100 percent contained but local smoke increasing due to Rim Fire

The 14,300-acre Spring Peak Fire near Bodie was declared 100 percent contained on Tuesday, Aug. 27, according to fire management officials. The fire did not burn any structures in the state park, but it did cause the road to Bodie to be closed for a few days last week.

According to officials Tuesday, "crews were able to complete the last of the containment lines around the perimeter of the fire. This allows the fire to be called 100 percent contained."

RAW: Yorba Linda woman dies near Baxter Pass after falling 150 feet

A Yorba Linda woman has died after falling 150 feet near the Baxter Pass area of the Sierra backcountry west of Independence, according to the Inyo County Sheriff's office.

On Aug. 23, Inyo County Sheriff’s dispatch was notified of a deceased victim near the Diamond Peak area near Baxter Pass, according to a news release from the Inyo County Sheriff's office.

Patricia Hadley, 54, Yorba Linda, had been hiking with a group and had gone on ahead, the news release states.

A 42-year-old Sonora man on Monday, Aug. 26, was in Renown Hospital in Reno following an accident at Mammoth Mountain Bike Park the previous Saturday afternoon.

BREAKING: Cops nab Bank of America robbery suspect

UPDATED 5:19 p.m. MONDAY—A 30-year-old man who is suspected of robbing the Mammoth Lakes Bank of America branch Monday morning, Aug. 26, was identified by police as Ryan Ward of Mammoth Lakes.

Ward was taken into custody after Mammoth Lakes police officers followed a tip.

They found Ward at the Motel 6 in Mammoth, according to Police Chief Dan Watson. 

UPDATE AUG. 26: Search for missing man continues

The search for a man last seen in Mammoth Lakes July 16 continued Monday, Aug. 26 after a pair of glasses found by a Mammoth Lakes hiker Friday, Aug. 23, near the Inyo Craters trailhead north of Mammoth, could not be positively identified as Matthew Greene's glasses.

Greene, 39, an experienced hiker and climber and a teacher from Pennsylvania,  was last seen in Mammoth after dropping off his car for repairs at a repair shop and left no note or indication of where he had gone.

RAW: Four thousand marijuana plants, 350 pounds of processed marijuana seized from Lone Pine area backcountry

A massive marijuana seizure occurred earlier this week in a steep drainage above Lone Pine called Hogsback Creek, according to the Inyo County Sheriff's Department.

According to a news release from the agency, on Aug. 21,"a massive multiagency eradication operation was successfully accomplished above Hogback Creek west of Lone Pine.

"Inyo Narcotics Enforcement Team (INET) and agents from the United States Forest Service have been investigating this particular grow-site and gathering evidence since May, 2013.

RAW: Missing local man, Matthew Mooney, found dead late Thursday afternoon after falling 30 feet

According to the Inyo County Sheriff's Department, the missing local man, Matthew Mooney, last known to have contacted family on Tuesday, was found dead in a mountain rock chute above Tamarack Lake yesterday, Aug. 22.

Search and rescue (SAR) teams discovered his body; he is believed to have fallen approximately 30 feet.

SAR teams have been searching for Mooney since about 10:30 p.m. on Aug. 20 after Inyo County Sheriff’s Dispatch was notified of an overdue hiker, according to the sheriff's department.

Some Suddenlink customers to have faster service this week

Mammoth is inching closer to faster broadband service, with some customers expected to have the service this week, according to Pete Abel, the vice president of corporate communications for Suddenlink.

“Digital 395 completed its work on Aug. 13 and we connected to their circuit the same day,” Abel said.

“Our engineering team tested that circuit, and per the positive results of those tests, we are in the process (Tuesday, Aug. 20) of moving local customers to the Digital 395 circuit.

Swall Meadows man missing after Tuesday day hike near Round Valley Peak

Search and rescue officials are asking for the public’s help in finding a Swall Meadows man, Matthew Mooney, who is overdue from a day hike that he started on Tuesday, Aug. 20.

Mooney, 47, is an experienced backcountry hiker and former member of the Inyo County Search and Rescue team, according to a news release from the Inyo County Sheriff’s department.

Outsourcing plan moves forward

Mammoth Lakes would create a government entity to help manage its myriad recreation components under a proposal that a special, 32-member super-committee sent to the Town Council this past week.

The committee, known as the Mammoth Lakes Recreation Steering Committee, made the recommendation Monday evening, Aug. 19, after nine hours of discussion over three separate meetings.
