The Mammoth Huskies basketball team, fresh off “character builder” losses at last weekend’s Whittell (Nev.) Tournament, is putting together the finishing touches before they begin play in the Desert Mountain League on Dec. 27.
If their 73-47 loss to Incline and their 71-38 loss to host school Whittell on Saturday was tough to take, their 56-48 victory against Lee Vining might have ameliorated the sting of the losses.
The bright spot in Nevada belonged to Fox Kailiawa.
The Tannenbaum Classic Nordic Ski Race started off the cross-country ski season Dec. 15 at Tamarack Cross Country Ski Center with a crowd of nearly 80 racers, ranging from youngsters who were on cross country skis for the first time to college athletes and a two-time Olympian.
Adults raced a 10km race, high school athletes a 5km, and juniors raced in either a 2km or 1km race. A large contingent of junior alpine racers came to test their skills in “uphill” skiing.
It’s hard to put a damper on Mammoth’s amateur weather forecaster Howard Sheckter’s optimism when it comes to winter weather, but the forecast for the next few weeks might have done so.
“It’s not good, it’s horrible,” he said. “It’s as bad as it can get by this time of year.”
He is not talking just about the Christmas and New Year’s Eve holiday weeks, either.
