Veterans gather in Mammoth; low-key ceremony at Fire Station #1

Veterans and their families, along with community members and town leaders, gathered Monday, Nov. 11, for the annual Veterans Day flag-raising at Fire Station #1 on Main Street.

Former Mono County Supervisor Duane "Hap" Hazard offered remarks to a gathering of several dozen people, including most of the forces of both the Mammoth Lakes Police Department and the Mammoth Lakes Fire District.

The event was at 9 a.m., and did not last long.

UPDATE NOV 12: Karch, local doctors, performing as many as 50 surgeries a day in Philippines

Mammoth Hospital orthopedic surgeon Dr. Mike Karch and the group of 15 Mammoth Hospital surgeons, doctors and medical support volunteers who are still the only medical team on the Philippine island of Leyte are wet and cold, but performing as many as 50 surgeries a day, including an emergency cesarean section in pouring rain, according to Karch's wife, Mammoth Hospital pediatrician Dr. Kim Escudero.

Snowcreek Athletic Club to remain closed for weeks during water damage repairs

Snowcreek Athletic Club will be closed at least for the next several weeks, after a massive water main break under the club last week flooded the basement and first floor of the club with more than a million gallons of water.

“At about 2 a.m. Wednesday, the water district saw their pressure going down, but they were not sure why,” said Ralph Lockhart, an owner of the Snowcreek club.
