Mammoth Lakes Tourism Director John Urdi came out of Tuesdayâs county supervisors meeting looking like a man at the end of his rope.
âI feel like Iâve failed,â he told the five supervisors Tuesday, as he made the case that the county should contribute at least $100,000 toward year-round air service subsidies next year. âIf you do not see the value of air service to you, to this county, to your constituents, after two years, Iâve failed.
It was supposed to be a hot, sunny week up here.
All week.
All the meteorological models showed relentless sun. None showed thunder, lightening, rain.
Yet at about 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Eastern Sierra residents sprang from their beds after a crash of thunder started off a spectacular lightning storm that lit the night sky for hours and dumped an inch of rain.
By 7 a.m., when the clouds had cleared, the White Mountains were cloaked in a thick, white blanket that looked very much like snow.

The body of Jacob Adams, 6, who was swept into the Merced River on Wednesday, August 15, was recovered on Thursday, Aug. 23.
Jacob was wading in the Merced River with his ten year old brother, Andres “Andy” Adams, near the Vernal Fall Footbridge on Aug. 15 when they were swept downstream. Andy was pulled from the river by a park visitor shortly after the incident but resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.

The future of a land trade that Mammoth Mountain Ski Area is pursuing for land at the base of Main Lodge may be at risk, according to Mono County Supervisor Vikki Bauer.
A proposed land trade with the U.S. Forest Service for the parcel of federal land needs the approval of Congress, since the forest service does not have enough land to trade to match the value of the property, she said. Congress must get involved when it takes a certain amount of cash to make up the difference in value and land available.
Mammoth Lakes Tourism on Thursday announced a partnership with Nalgene, the American Park Network, and Brita Hydration Station on a plastic bottle trade-in program in support of the Eastern Sierra Interpretive Association (ESIA).

Mammoth is not the only place in the county facing increasing bear problems these days, as the dry summer forces hungry bears out of the woods and into human communities.
Walker residents found that out first hand recently, when they tried to drop off their garbage at the county dump.
At least one bear has been active at the dump this year, to the point that the dump has been closed a few times to avoid human and bear encounters.

The Gateway âWelcomeâ project is $108,395 over budget estimates, but it still is moving forward.
Construction could begin as early as September for the two signs on both sides of S.R. 203 after the Town Council Wednesday evening approved more public art funds to the project.
Those funds are earmarked and not a part of the general fund, the council emphasized in explaining the move, although that did not mollify the concerns of Councilmember Joe Bacon.
Recently, Matt Graeff, the middle linebacker for the team, was diagnosed with cancer and will miss the season while he fights and recovers.
Graeff is currently undergoing chemotherapy and acted as the guest barber Aug. 15 as the team came together to rally for him and shave their heads.
The coaches welcomed Graeff as a coach but wished he were on the field with his fellow teammates.
According to the coaching staff at Mammoth High School, this season will be dedicated to him.

Members of The Campaign For A Healthy California would like express their deep appreciation to the all those from Mammoth and other Eastern Sierra communities, including representatives from Mammoth Hospital and the Department of Health, who joined us Tuesday evening for the showing of the wonderful documentary, The Healthcare Movie. Â
