Had enough music in the woods yet?
That would be, “No.”
On the heels of Bluesapalooza two weekends ago and Latin music in the Village at the Margarita Festival (see P. 1), comes the Mammoth Festival—Wine, Music, Food & Art.
This is a Mammoth Mountain Ski Area event, and those people know how to put on a show.
It all began last night on the ski hill with a five-course “Winemaker Dinner” at Parallax, and then continues tonight (Friday) at the Village, with live music by Berel Alexander during the Mammoth Mountain Community Foundation’s “Wine Walk.”
The iconoclastic John Vereuck, seen here and there in his MINI Cooper, is back in town after a 25-day, 32-city tour of the U.S.
He joined other MINI mavens in New Jersey for a trip back home.
Highlights? Nashville, he said, followed by a trip to the track at the Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Town rules regulators say they’ve received a number of complaints about tent sales in Mammoth—an old tune in a new bottle.
Specifically, Mammoth community development director Mark Wardlaw said most of the complaints were directed toward Mammoth Sporting Goods on Old Mammoth Road and at the new Value Sports zone in the Mammoth Luxury Outlet shopping mall.
Wardlaw made his remarks at Wednesday’s Town Council meeting.
“They do have permits,” he said, “but they are outside compliance” rules.
The council took no action on the matter.
A 10-year-old boy was pronounced dead and a 6-year-old boy remained missing following an incident near the Vernal Fall Footbridge in Yosemite National Park on Wednesday, Aug. 15, according to park officials.
A family group, from Southern California, was in the Merced River near the Vernal Fall Footbridge Wednesday afternoon around 3 p.m. They had begun their hike at the Happy Isles Trailhead and hiked about one mile, where they stopped at the footbridge.
The Town Council put a firm “hold” on Measure R (recreation) and Measure U (recreation, arts and culture) funds until the town discovers where it is at in terms of its ongoing application for municipal bankruptcy protection.
The move by the council was at the behest of Councilmember Jo Bacon. It passed unanimously.
While town ordinances are in place for residential units, there is no such ordinance covering bear-proof trash bins for restaurants, Town Councilmember Jo Bacon said.
She said she would propose such an ordinance change at a future meeting.
Mammoth Lakes Housing, the public arm of providing affordable housing in town, should be posted as smoke free, said Town Councilmember Rick Wood.
It is not a done deal yet, but MLH is headed that way, he said.

The window of opportunity for opening June Mountain this winter is closed, and June residents now must decide how they will use $100,000 in “bridge” money that the county supervisors agreed to give to help the town weather the coming winter.

To let the bears die this horrible death is cruel and unnecessary.
