It was hard to fight for social security. It was hard to fight for civil rights. It was hard to fight for healthcare. But we got it done.â

This is the trouble season for Keith Dawley.
The 49-year-old trails supervisor for the Inyo National Forest, Dawley peers at the sky each September and October, hoping â praying â for enough snow to ski.
âSeptember is the hardest month,â said Dawley, who has one of the more spectacular streaks of skiing anywhere. âUsually by the end of October, Halloween, it snows somewhere.â
For 189 straight months (that would be more than 15 years) the personable Dawley has skied at least once in each month, sometimes hiking up, up and up to find enough snow to make a turn.

The question of where itâs appropriate to locate a medical marijuana dispensary popped up again this week when Mono Countyâs Mental Health Director Ann Gimpel asked for approval to move the countyâs Wellness Center from a proposed dispensary site.
Gimpel suggested it might be more appropriate to put the Wellness Center in the Sierra Center Mall with the rest of Mono Countyâs offices, moving it from its current location at the KMMT building on Laurel Mountain Road.
Chances are, when one thinks of soul men, it’s a memory of that old song by Sam and Dave, “I’m a soul man.”
But that wouldn’t be the current usage. “Soul Men” is the name of the first program of Chamber Music Unbound’s winter music series.
Mammoth’s resident Felici Piano Trio will perform Bach, the grand master of the Baroque; the great Classical hero, Beethoven; Chopin, the Romantic piano virtuoso; and the eloquent musical narrator Robert Schumann.
The community is invited to a wedding reception and the party wonât come to a close until someone is dead!

It might have been a bye week for the Mammoth Huskies last week, but that didnât mean that Head Coach Tom Gault and his coaching crew took the weekend off.
Instead, they got their video equipment in order and traveled to Murrieta, where they watched, analyzed and shot video of Calvary Murrietaâs 16-6 loss to Bloomington Christian â a loss that dropped Mammothâs next opponent to 0-2 for the season.
Calvary Murrieta comes calling tonight at Gault/McClure Stadium, with a JV game at 4 oâclock and the varsity at 7.

When none of the county’s District 4 Supervisor candidates took home 50 percent of the vote in June, it triggered a run-off election for November between the top two vote getters, Tim Hansen and Tim Fesko.
The 2010 Mammoth High School Cross Country season is off and running, with two large invitationals under its belt. On Sept. 10, Mammoth traveled to the Whittel Warrior invitational in Zephyr Cove at Lake Tahoe, Calif.
More than 30 high schools came together to compete and see who was âbest of the best.â Mammoth only brought seven of its members, but showed the much larger schools they should not be overlooked.
One hundred forty-four players raised $35,000 in support of higher education and cultural enrichment at the sold-out 11th Annual Mammoth Lakes Foundation Golf Classic last Sunday, Sept. 12.
Mammoth Lakes Foundation Scholarship students and South Gateway Student Apartment students were among volunteers at Sierra Star Golf Course supporting the Mammoth Lakes Foundation scholarship fund.
Highlights of the scramble tournament included an iPad raffle, Super Ticket raffle, $5,000 putting contest, silent auction, awards party, and closest-to-the-pin prize on all par threes.

Itâll be some kind of book signing Saturday afternoon, Sept. 25, at the Booky Joint, where John Muir âJackâ Laws not only will sign his swell new guidebook, but also will offer some artistic demonstrations.
Laws will sprinkle how-to demos in illustration, painting and sketching at the event, which starts at one oâclock and ends at 3.
Dave Leonard, owner of the bookstore, said Laws is a very entertaining guest, and for the Booky Joint to have him is a real treat.
He said refreshments will be served during the book signing, but the book is a refreshment in itself.

For a one day-hiker in the Minaret Wilderness, an ordinary day-hike on Monday turned into a day-night sojurn, finishing with a helicopter ride.
The hiker, a 22-year-old man who was separated from his friends near Devils Postpile National Monument, spent Monday night in the Minaret Wilderness before being picked up by helicopter Tuesday morning with help from the Mono County Search and Rescue team.
The hikerâs identity and home town were not known as of Tuesday afternoon. He was unhurt, said Pete DeGeorge of the sheriffâs department.
The fiery car accident on U.S. 395 that resulted in the deaths of two teenage cross country runners and a cheerleading coach from Southern California on Aug. 9 was at least partly due to driver error, according to a California Highway Patrol report.
Seventeen-year-old Natalie Nield was driving a Ford SUV headed south a few miles south of Bishop at the time of the accident. The vehicle was registered to Gabrielle Nield.

If people were to canvass the two artists at Bluebird Imaging, theyâd discover that Kendra Knight and Aaron Horowitz are wild about canvas.
âThe appeal to me would be that it looks more painterly,â said Knight, half of the husband-and-wife team. Together, they dazzled shoppers at last weekâs Labor Day Festival of the Arts with photographs printed on canvas, then stretched on a 3-D display board.
'Tis the season for fattening up

On our calendar, we see the Millpond Music Festival is coming up this weekend, signaling either the end of summer or the beginning of fall.
Whatever. One thing is for certain: the fall shoulder season is here, and all around us, everyone is fattening up.
The bears are getting more plump, for sure, and as they lumber through the town, they no doubt notice with disheartening alarm that the sloppy visitors are gone and the dumpsters are secure again. Bummer for them, we suppose.
Bike shops are turning into ski shops. Around here, thatâs like aspens turning. Time is getting short.
